thanks!

Drizzd - I had heard reports that EveryQuest was broken, but if it's working, then great, I'll just refer to it when people ask for that feature. I'd rather focus on fixing bugs at this point than adding a large new feature. Maybe at some point in the future I will make the full quest list built-in.
Some other addons also have the feature of showing all quests and use the server query to show what you've done already. One is MobMap, which is available at http://www.mobmap.de. But as EveryQuest works along with QG I don't think it would be wise to include a huge quest database in QG unless you plan to use databases for other languages than english. Also those database files need to get updated frequently. And even then it does not always work as Blizzard changes quests and quest IDs sometimes. I noticed many small problems when using EveryQuest.
I would recommend to get QG working first as there are many problems with the taints mentioned.

@MrOBrian: You mean other than EveryQuest proper?

Just an update: Last week I had finals in school (happens every 9 weeks with the program I'm doing), this week I found a new job and put in my 2 weeks notice at my old job. This means that I will be very busy training my replacements, and then in 2 weeks I will no longer be working from home and will be learning a new job. Unfortunately, QuestGuru development is going to slow down because of all of this. I might have to focus on bug fixes and not put in some of the new features I had planned for a while. Does anyone know if there is a good EveryQuest type addon that shows all quests and what you've done? I want to implement this into QuestGuru, but don't have the time yet, and it's highly requested.

@BloodWolfe: there is a workaround for the "Character Specific Keybindings" problem:
In the keybindings page turn "Character Specific Keybindings" off, then find the QuestGuru keybinding and make sure it is bound to a key; accept all changes. It should stick, though you'll then need to log in to each Alt and turn "Character Specific Keybindings" off for them too.
Just a heads up that there are taint issues at least for some people with version 1.3.
@MrOBrian: I have posted more details (including a couple logs) at the wowi comment section.
For the moment I've gone back to v2.0 beta2 that doesn't seem to suffer the issue.

An annoying bug: If you are tracking an achievement and quests, and you have the quests side of things selected, if you log out and then back in, the tracker switches to the achievements side of things. This is 100% reproducible.
I was wondering if you can fix this addon so it does NOT force the "Character Specific Keybindings" option. I tested the few addons I have and this is the only one that changed that setting for me in my keybindings and it is quite annoying as on most of my characters I do not use character specific keybindings but for some reason this addon forces that option on and checks the box for me. I can uncheck it and log out but when I log it, it is checked again automatically. Can you please fix this?

Tnx for getting back to me MrObrian. Well, I did abandon a PVP quest recently, 2 of them actually; the 2 you get from the Battleground NPC - Daily "Call to Arms: Arathi Basin" and "Concentrated Effort". A while back I also abandoned 1 or 2 from WG, but the other 2 are more recent. Let me know if you need anything else.
mac300 - Did you recently abandon a PVP quest? Maybe something from Wintergrasp or the daily battleground quest or something? It seems you have run into an error that I didn't fully test and if you could give me a specific quest I could better track it down and fix it, but I'll definitely start testing more PVP quests.

PS. I deleted all folders b4 installing 1.3, and it was working fine until a few days ago.

@warderbrad: Did you delete all QuestGuru folders inside your addon folder before installing QG 1.3?
is anyone else having an issue when trying to view the quest log? I am both trying to use the keybind key and the button and the left click of the quest name in the tracker and all result in no log opening up. If I log out and disable QG it then is able to load the log. I am using QG 1.3 however I am not receiving any specific error messages.
I started working on version 1.4 already and it has a working "Show Map" button, like Blizzard's quest log, and the next thing I will work on adding is the history from the servers. There is some database cleanup that needs to be done first, though.
Two things I noticed so far. The MobMap icons are not in the right place in the quest description of the questlog. And the daily quest tab is not implemented.
Happy new year everyone, that's the first good news for 2010. I really missed the features of QG 1.x. Maybe I can modify my testcode to query the history from the server and at least get the quest names so that this can be included in QG to make it a little less dependent from the saved variables.
Just wanted to let you know I love this add-on; both versions. What I like most about 2.0 is that my quest history comes from the server; I play on two different computers and I don't always know which ones I have done and which I still need to do.
thanks for your continued work on QG. I didn't mind the version 2 but missed some of the features of the 1 series. So I am glad you have gone back.
I finally got around to cleaning up the archives here. I will leave QuestGuru 2.0 in the archives for anyone who prefers to keep using it, though I will not continue development on it.
LostDrewid - 2.0 was buggy and incomplete, it was still in Beta and I was finding that modifying Blizzard's quest log was more difficult than making my own. The 11 folders of the 1.x series are there to reduce memory usage. It used to be that the mod could take up 10-15MB or more of memory, now it's down to usually around 3-5MB.
Hearing that the 2.0 line of QG has ended has really bummed me out. To be completely honest, I stopped using QG after its expansion into 11 different mods; it became, quite simply, ugly to have all those addons unnecessarily clogging up the list. And the mod itself wasn't what I enjoyed in the past.
I decided to give 2.0 a shot and loved it. It was everything I remembered and more. I've been very lazy lately when it comes to updating my addons - once I got ones that worked with 3.3, I couldn't be arsed to download new updates. But when I saw that QG updated, I immediately clicked on the link.
Right now, all I can say is that I hope the "unpopularity" of 2.0 is merely the sign of a very vocal minority, and that people who like 2.0 will come out of the woodworks now that we're losing that mod.
If nothing else, please make an archival copy of 2.0, so that people can choose which they prefer?
By popular demand, QuestGuru has been reverted to the 1.x version. Today's release, 1.3, is updated to be compatible with patch 3.3. It does not yet take advantage of downloading the History from the servers, there are some database changes I want to make first, but I think most people will be happier with this version than where 2.0 was going.
I noticed in a lot of the quest text. Where it shows the rewards or things needed when you mouse over then. The word discription is always in one of them.
Ah... I didn't know the expand/collapse all button was blizzards. Well i'm missing it :)
Gorramit - If you mean in the quest log, that's because Blizzard decided to remove the expand/collapse all button. I'm seriously considering reviving the old QuestGuru that just completely replaces Blizzard's quest log since so many people preferred mine over theirs.
I have a problem: I can't "fold" all the quests, only one at a time??
Galvin - I think I can make the quest log draggable. I'm not sure why Blizzard doesn't just make all their frames movable, it seems like a simple enough thing to do that would make a lot of people happy.
Silkrogue - the error you got was from the QuestGuru_History part of the old addon, which should have been deleted. Make sure you deleted all of the folders that begin with QuestGuru, including all of the History ones.
@MrObrian - I understand your point, but I'm one of the rare breed. When I update my mods, I do everything manually, I delete ALL the old folders then I unzip the program, thus creating new folders each time. So I'm doing what you asked and I still got the error. Sorry that it took a week to get back, but work has kept me busy lately and I haven't been able to play for the last week.
Anyway you can make the questlog draggable
Thanks
Taurakus - I'm thinking it would be easier to update the old version than to make all those tweaks to Blizzard's quest log.
Drizzd - I'll look into it, thank you for bringing it to my attention.

v2.0 BUG: The Share|Abandon|Track buttons become unclickable/disabled
when there are not enough quests in questlog to require a scrollbar.
Hmm, curious why might revive 1.2 instead of porting old tracking to new version? It seems there are ways to modify the existing UI, you've added your own history button, Auctionneer adds tabs... could their method work on this Blizzard Quest Log frame as well? You're the author, the one doing the work, I'm just curious :)
For everyone getting an error when mousing over the tracker that mentions UpdatePartyInfoTooltip, a temporary fix is to go into the tracker's options and turn off the display of party tooltips. The next released version of QuestGuru will fix this error.
I actually am planning to make a drop-down with a bunch of options for what to display in the history. I likely won't make the new History have the same info as the old history or add an Abandoned history to the new version. I *might* (but maybe not) update the old version of QuestGuru to work with 3.3 and not continue with this new 2.0 version that I created.
For the Completed Quest window, what about providing several dropdowns to help filter which set of quests your looking at.
The first drop down would determine what the other ones were.
The first having 'By Zone', 'By Profession', 'By Class', ...
Then the set would be for [Continent] [Zone]
Or for [Profession]
Or for [Class]
Or something along those lines to more easily find what set we're looking for.
Thanks
Regarding Abandoned quests, will you be re-adding tracking of these ? And again allow us to merge in the data from 1.2 ? I also found this very handy for reminding me of quests in areas I was not quite ready to complete at the time I was there.
Regarding the tracking and completed quests. What about performing the tracking you used to do, and just merge the information with the 'Completed' list that blizzard's new API provides, and for those that were not tracked by you, just simply say (in the quest info area) 'Quest details not available, quest was not completed while QuestGuru was in use'.
And of course, allow us to use the previously tracked data from 1.2 to be merged :)

Silkrogue - there is a reason that the description of the addon starts with: *** WHEN UPGRADING FROM 1.x TO 2.x ***
Please delete ALL previous Interface/AddOns/QuestGuru folders! QuestGuru 2.0 is a MAJOR version change and many folders are no longer used.
Fimbul_Fambi - QuestGuru now just modifies the built-in quest log, so if you don't like the size, complain to Blizzard.

MrOBrian - I understand the issues that prompted the changes in the quest history features. What about the size of the quest log display? Do you think that that will be something that you will be able to change? I'd really like to have a larger quest log again.

Would it be possible to have a setting on the announcer where if you are not in a group it would echo but if you are in a group then the echo is turned off? I ask as when I am alone it is nice to have the info but when in a group I get it twice.
I am experimenting with addon programming but I am not very experienced with lua code.
Currently I am able to get quest names by using the quest IDs delivered from QueryQuestsCompleted. With that knowledge it should at least be possible to modify the current QG history to display localized quest names. The goal should be that QG displays localized sections and quest names without the need of localized quest databases and QG should have an option to show all quests and highlight the completed or show only completed quests so it should work with an out of date quest database file.
@Gorramit: Thottbot is woefully outdated and QuestGuru History kept details specific to your character. I will add that I too am dismayed at the updated QuestGuru. The ability to keep track of the many additional details that Blizzard fails or refuses to do is what this add-on did better than any others. Not to mention that the author took the time to update it as necessary. I do like the features that Blizzard has included with 3.3, however it does not replace this add-on. I do understand being busy and I only hope that in the future QuestGuru will return to keeping the details that it used to.
I've discovered a problem. When opening the log whilst in combat, most things seem to be locked out (their secure stuff)
can't we just look that up at thotbott? :)
@Gorramit: The problem is that you only get the quest IDs from the server. There is currently no way to get quest details (name, questtext, rewards,...) . The only possible thing is a tooltip with the questtext. So an addon that shows a history needs to have a complete database of quest names for every language. Maybe Blizzard implements further functions for addons in the future.
But if you query the server for the complete quests, do you need to make your own database?
It would absolutely be possible to make QG 1.2 compatible with patch 3.3, the problem is that I simply don't have the time to constantly keep up with all the changes and how complex the addon was getting. When I graduate in June I might have more time, depending on my work schedule. I actually really like the changes Blizzard has made to the quest log, which is why I just make a few small modifications to it now. I have a lot of changes planned for the history, but I'm not sure about getting it back to the old look... maybe if I had some help with putting together a complete quest database containing all the information.
This is not a knock to MrOBrian - GuestGuru was extremely useful to me for the last 2 years, and I appreciate all the work that he put into it. But I don't need help tracking what quests I am currently doing - Blizzard does that adequately, if not as good as QG - I need help tracking what Blizzard doesn't do - what I've completed, what I've abandoned, and what I've done with some alts that I haven't done with this alt (that out of the way quest that I always forget). Can anyone recommend an addon that tracks these items? MrOBrian - you know QG better than any of us: do you think that it would be possible (for another addon programmer) to make QG 1.2 compatible with patch 3.3? or have Blizzards changes completely destroyed any possibility of retaining this detailed history data? Thanks again for your efforts on this addon.
MrOBrian,
Would it be too much trouble if you were to make the History window default to fully collapsed instead of its current form of everything in the list being fully expanded/opened?
I think it would also be nice if you could make it so that we can move the quest window again.
MrOBrian,
Been a while since I posted here, we used to chat once in a while. Anyhow. I am testing your latest version on my 34 Alliance Paladin at the moment and so far I gotta say nice job!
Sure, like others I miss seeing the exact quest text and objectives you used to see when visiting the questgiver - it just makes it a bit harder to help others with their questing - but if Lightheaded can fix the search ability a bit better I guess that won't matter too much. And like you said it saves a lot of memory not to mention about 11 less folders in the addon folder. Thanks!
Since I am only playing my 34 Paladin right now I don't know if it keeps track of dailies on a separate tab like it used too. From the sounds of it I guess you no longer keep track of abandoned quests so I am guessing maybe dailies aren't on a separate tab anymore? I would miss these features.
But I got to commend you on another thing - as far as I am concerned, you just put EveryQuest out of use. With your history listing from game server there is absolutely no need whatsoever for EveryQuest anymore, nor it's 12 folders!
Thanks a ton lol! One less addon to worry about!
Great job and thanks for not giving up on us users! You do marvelous work!
PS: HANDS DOWN you still have the best quest addon and tracker!
Regards =)
BOOO! to WoWInterface for screwing up the forum comments and not allowing line breaks!
Galvin - I'm trying to find a balance between complaints about memory usage and losing History on game crashes, and dealing with complaints about how Blizzard implemented a highly requested feature. What it comes down to is that I don't have time to keep up with all the changes that are constantly made to the game, so if you can make a better History, go for it.
Peyana - The history is now retrieved from the server, it is no longer necessary to store it on your local machine.
From what I seen in the beta when I tried it on the PTR. All the mod does is download which quests you did already from the server. But that's it. There's no quest text with it, no location info, no time and date info. To me I see this as more of a downgrade than an improvement.
Say your quest log is full 25 quests, and you abandon a few to make up room for a 5man. With the new mod you won't. be able to see where those quests came from cuase they'll be no abandon log anymore. I have no idea how the author finds the server history useful when it only gives IDs and no other info. So yes you'll lose all your current data and just have a list of quests you done but no other info with that.
When updating and deleting the folders you listed, I won't lose my history data, correct?
QuestGuru 2.0 released today to coincide with patch 3.3. I am still calling this one a "Beta" simply because it was not previously released and needs more testing. I'm actually kind of hoping someone else comes out with a good History mod so I can focus on the Tracker and quest log modifications. The images above are not updated because the realms are down, so I couldn't grab screenshots; I'll do that later. When upgrading, PLEASE delete all previous Interface/AddOns/QuestGuru folders!

Been having a problem with the tracker for the standard 1.2 version of QuestGuru which is really starting to bug me so thought id ask for some help as im stumped.
Playing my main character it works fine. Just recently i started playing 1 of my alts & even tho ive duplicated the settings, quests untrack reguardless of the settings. In the end i deleted everything to do with QuestGuru & started fresh which seemed to fix my problem. Couple of days ago i started playing my 2nd alt & yet again quests untrack reguardless of settings again.
Only completed quests seem to untrack but picking up a item for a quest (say 1 of 10 boars meat) or killing something (1 of 10 tigers) will untrack all completed quests. Also handing in a quest will untrack completed quests.
Any ideas?

Based on feedback looks like only a few people have tried the beta one. I think a lot of people are not going to like it for the following reasons.
1. No longer tracks abandoned quests. Great feature if the log gets full and you can abandon a few to do some new ones elsewhere in the world then go back to the old ones.
2. Blizzard only keeps IDs of past quests done. So you no longer have location info, time and date of when you did the quest. Who the quest giver was etc.
3. The history just lumps the 1000s of quests you done. The history would need maybe different expansion tabs. One for classic, BC, Northrend, Cataclsym and dailies for each expansion. So when you start the new expansion you can keep track of just the new quests and not get spammed by the 5000 past quests you did over the last 5 years.
In my opinion the mod should of stayed like it was then used the history from the server to fill in quests that you don't have saved on your computer. I just don't see how its a good thing taking out features from the mod just to support the terrible quest history the server tracks.
Looks like the comment editor removed all the formatting I put in.
mac300 - That's strange... Are you also using QuestGuru when you use the tracker? I'm not really sure what could cause this problem, but you can try deleting the QuestGuru.lua and QuestGuru_Tracker.lua files from the SavedVariables folder for the toon that is experiencing the disconnect. You'll have to redo your setting, but your History won't be lost if you just delete those two files.

Problem with QuestGuru Tracker.
I have the latest version installed, and sometimes when I try to login to wow it kicks me out with the "You have been disconnected by the server" message. No error from the addon is received.
When i disable the Tracker it logs me in ok.
As I said, it's not happening all the time.
Any ideas?
PS. not sure where to open a bug report, which is why I wrote this here.

I've posted a fix for that in the wowi comment space.
It's a minor edit.

questguru doesn't like the pilgrim quests very much. to trigger this best quest to use would be the quest from commoners telling you hwere to go first.

I tried the new beta on the PTR. The thing I don't like about this is the history shows the last 3000 quests I've done. This is way too spammy. One feature I liked about the addon was keeping track of new quests I've done. This becomes extremely useful in a new expansion. When the next expansion comes out I don't care about the last 3000 quests. I just care about tracking the new quests and keeping tabs on what new quests I've done.
It looks like the server doesn't keep track of when you did the quest date and time info and where. I don't see how the server info is going to be of any use. Just looks like this mod is not going to be very useful in quest tracking in the new expansion.

With many alts, managing which quests I've completed for which characters has been very difficult. Especially quests that are not part of a chain, or result from an item that has been picked up. I hope that you do not remove the alts quest status - I'd actually like to see it improved. Also, I find the tabs very useful for separating current, history, abandoned, and daily data.
Regarding quest data - if quest ids are used to manage quest status within QG, why not make an adjunct addon or module that could be referenced by those -like myself- who occasionally want quest detail. As a database file - or files - it would only need to be updated when first installed, or when a patch adds new quests.

Mr O'Brian,
I would prefer that the alts quest tracker remain, I personally think that's the most useful feature (when it works properly)

I know about the problems getting quest info when you only have the ID.
By looking around a bit I saw that the wowhead database seems to have a lot of quests and is available in five languages. Unless you already got the data from wowhead it should be worth asking if they can supply files with the necessary data.

Unfortunately the new API that Blizzard implemented to retrieve the quest history only returns the quest id, with no way of pulling up more information about the quest. That means that addons that want to use this data either have to save quest information as the player comes across it (which means no data for before the addon was installed) or provide a huge list of every quest in the game with each release. Localization will be possible, but I want to focus on other functionality first, then add other languages if necessary.

So now I looked at the "new" QG and I am sorry to say I am a bit disappointed.
I liked the tabs for quest log, history and daily. Everything worked fine with the german client as the data (region names, quest names, quest givers) was automatically collected.
What I got now is the same that EveryQuest does. It queries the completed quests and compares it to a saved quest list which is not available in other languages and needs to get updated to be up to date with every patch. The zone names and quest names need to get localized. Zones can be translated by using LibBabbleZone but there are several names that are not included there (e.g. the gnome starting zone is called Anvilmar). About quest names I don't know but it should be possible. The new Zygor Guide 2.0 translates quest names when the quest id is included in the guide but I was unable to find out how they do that.

Glad to see you got the history working without having to save all the stuff yourself.
I'm still downloading the PTR client and will test the QG beta as soon as possible.
The alts' status is not that important. It's a nice feature to see which alts completed which quest. As you can get the completed quests from the server maybe this could be reimplemented in the future.

I figured you'd really like the quest history being available. I know I was excited when I heard that!

I just posted a Beta of QuestGuru 2.0. It is ONLY for the 3.3 patch, please don't try to use it on the live servers as you will get errors.
With QuestGuru 2.0 I am simplifying the addon. Blizzard has made their quest log much better than it had been, so now QuestGuru will just enhance it rather than replace it. QuestGuru Tracker will not change much, it seems to be working pretty good as it is, but it did need some behind-the-scenes changes to work with 3.3.
Also, starting with version 2.0 the History is built-in to the main part of the addon, so no more having a dozen different directories! I'm still working on the look of the History, and have some features to add to it, but I have posted this Beta version so I can get people to help me test it and give me some feedback.
If you get any errors or see any problems involving Blizzard's feedback stuff, just ignore it. Once the patch goes live and those elements are removed, everything should be fine, and if not I'll have it fixed within a couple days :)

Yeah, the display of alt status is kinda bugged sometimes. With changes and simplifications I'm making for the next version, maybe I'll just remove it, unless anyone has a major objection.

Not sure if this has been brought before, but when I roll over a quest in the mini-window list, it shows me a list of alts also on the quest. The problem is, it shows my two level 80 alts who completed it months ago. I have 2 other alts that do have the quest (Obsidian Dragonshine), but they don't show on the list.
Is the alt list bugged or do I need to clean out something?

mysticalos - Yes, that's what we've been discussing. It's actually very simple to retrieve the list of quest ids for completed quests. What I don't want is to have to store huge databases that are loaded into memory to populate the rest of the information. I'm hoping Blizzard will allows us to dynamically pull the information from the server based on the questid. Now if you find an addon that does THAT, I'd love to hear about it.
