AlphaMap v3.76.30100
telic@hotmail.co.uk
Compatible with QuestHelper v0.46 and later
Includes Maps for Instances, Battlegrounds, & World Bosses, and the major non-Instance Cave systems
Basically, AlphaMap is a scalable, moveable, transparent WorldMap that the user can have on screen while they continue to play and interact with the world.
Move the AlphaMap by holding down Control & Alt keys, and moving via the yellow movement bars at the top and bottom of the map.
Supported by PartySpotter, and MozzFullWorldMap(Fan's Update).
Native support for MapNotes, Gatherer, MetaMapNotes, CTMapMod, FlightMap, AtlasLoot, and NotesUNeed
See Patch Notes / Change History for specific details of functional changes/bug fixes
FEATURES NOT TO MISS
- World Map replacement mode via the 'Mouse Interaction' checkbox in the Miscallaneous Tab of the Options. ALT-Clicking on the AlphaMap will allow you to zoom in/out via left/right clicks. Without the <Alt> key pressed, then AlphaMap will remain invisible to the mouse as per current functionality.
- World Map 'Compact' veiwing mode, which will trim the world map, and only show explorable areas; so that keeping the map up on screen uses even less space.
The 'Standard'/'Compact' veiwing modes can be switched via a key binding.
NOTE : A side affect of this will mean that characters won't see areas they haven't discovered yet. If you would like to use Compact viewing mode, but STILL be able to see ALL areas in the current Map, you will need to install 'MozzFullWorldMap (Fans Update)'
- Special Battlefield options for reporting positions and incoming. (Note that the Raid Group numbered icons in the pictures are only available with the 'PartySpotter' AddOn installed)
FEATURES IN MORE DETAIL
High Quality Instance Maps :
lots of options allowing you to change the scale, alpha, the display of notes, note backgrounds, map background, Instance Header and Footer information, instance legend, the ability to change the colour of the note and/or map backgrounds.
Compatible with the latest versions of AtlasLoot (v1.60 and later). Atlas not required if you need to save memory.
Instance settings are saved separately to the World Map settings, so you don't have to change the way AlphaMap is displayed every time you enter/exit an Instance.
Or, save all Instance map settings separately allowing you to have different Instance maps set to different sizes, etc. Uncheck the box on the 'Dungeons' tab of the Options frame.
High Quality BattleGround Maps :
Minimap textured maps of Battlegrounds displaying all player units, and Battleground flags/objectives.
In Warsong Gulch, extra flag icons record which players have picked up which flags. Left click on a flag to target the carrier. Right click the flag to bring up a menu allowing you to report the flag's position to Raid/Party/General chat.
In Arathi Basin, the number of bases required to win is displayed next to your Faction's entry point. When ever the number of bases you need to win changes, a message is sent to your chat box to inform you of this. If you have the Scrolling Combat Text AddOn installed, then this message will also be displayed in the center of the screen. Right click on bases to report the number of incoming enemy to Raid/Party/General chat.
In Alterac Valley, Right click on bases to report the number of incoming enemy to Raid/Party/General chat.
As per all AlphaMap maps, the scale, alpha, and position of the maps can be changed and will be saved separately from the World Map settings or the Instance map settings.
Or, save all Battleground map settings independantly from each other allowing you to show the large Alterac Valley map at a smaller scale than the small Warsong Gulch map - Uncheck the box on the 'Battlegrounds' tab of the Options frame.
World Boss Maps & Instance Exteriors Caves :
For example, maps for Gnomeregan dungeon (before you enter the Instance), Dire Maul exterior, and Maraudon Exterior; And zoomed minimap style maps for the World Bosses Lord Kazzak, Azuregos, and all 4 of the Four Dragons. All these maps are capable of displaying player units, and all save their settings spearately from each other, and from the World, Instance and Battleground maps.
All the above maps have AlphaMap notes detailing key locations, mobs, etc. These notes can be clicked to do one or more of the following :
Left Click
- If the note leads to another map, then that map will be displayed. e.g. links between LBRS/UBRS/BWL, DM maps, etc.
- If the note has Loot noted for it, a small gold coin will be displayed next to it, and left clicking will show the AtlasLoot frame
Righ Click will raise a menu with several possible options
- You can leave a particular map note highlighted
- In Battlegrounds, there are special options for reporting the number of enemy incoming on a base, or the location of a flag carrier
- If you have NotesUNeed installed, then you can open a NotesUNeed note, or Send the NotesUNeed note text to your Raid/Party/Guild. i.e. store the tactics for a particular boss in a NotesUNeed note, and then send those tactics to your Raid via the right click menu for that boss on the AlphaMap.

@mfoley
All AddOns that work with WoW - work regardless of which operating system you are running; Windows, Mac, or some form of WINE on Linux...
AlphaMap is still out of date since the last patch, so from the character selection screen, you should click on the AddOns button on the lower left of the screen, and make sure to check the box "Load Out of Date AddOns"...
If you don't see the 'AddOns' button on the character selection screen, or don't see AlphaMap listed amongst the installed AddOns, then it is not installed properly - check the forums for more help on installing AddOns.

does this addon work with a mac? is there something else i'm supposed to do to make it work? i just got a new mac but the addon isn't working.

I just found the problem, it's NOT AlphaMap. Sorry Telic for the wrong bug report :-/

It still needs to be loaded as Out of date...
It still needs a couple of maps...
In what way is it broken :'(

AlphaMap seems to be broken now :-(

Note : the Quick Options 'Toggle Players' button works differently to the Group Pins option in the main AlphaMap Options frame.
The Quick Option toggle just gives a quick way of turning party/raid dots on and off quickly.
The Group Pins option on the options frame gives a way of filtering raid dots to only show your local party members.
(Quick Options accessible by holding down <Control> & <Alt> at the same time)

Ah, ok. Noted. I will take a look.

Excellent addon Telic, one thing has happened though, with the new update. When I click on my "?" icon to get the quest tracking dots on the transparent alphamap, they now showup about a inch to the northwest of the actual position that they show up on the actual WoW world map.
It doesn't give me any error message or anything, wish I could provide one, but I can't. What I can do is tell you that I use Mob Map in tandem with your Alpha Map. Maybe I don't have the communication right between the 2, I am not sure but it is there. No biggy, it is not a life changing event lol, just thought I would let you know though. :{)

There were 7 other AlphaMap errors but I think it's all due to this first problem.
All this happened upon loading. I can not even open AlphaMap at this point - I get an error attempting to do so.
Update: Upon deleting the extra "then" at line 4337, as pointed out in the error message, the addon works perfectly again. Amazing how one typo can break a whole project ... heh

@dragongamer
Metamap has been abandoned for a long time afaik, so I can't guarantee that AlphaMap will display your notes.
OR MapNotes (Fan's Update) can be used to convert your MetaMap notes to that AddOn which IS compatible with AlphaMap ;)

This method can also be used to change the size and opacity of the original World Map.
(Must have enabled World Map changes from the Miscallaneous Tab of AlphaMap Options)
WotLK VEHICLE HIGHLIGHTING
- new WotLK vehicle units are more clearly highlighted on AlphaMap, including a direction indicator
Colour coding indicates Horde (red), Alliance (blue), Air (light blue), Ground (green).
A single highlighting bracket indicates the vehicle is unoccupied.
- the original World Map frame will now scale in place, rather than being re-centered
- the original World Map will now remember its position when moved
- unit icons are now slightly larger by default
- fixed bug where MozzFullWorldMap is loaded but not enabled
- adjustment to Alterac Valley Graveyard timers

Thank you again, Telic for your prompt response to my questions. I am sorry I had not noticed these features before posting, they are in fact helpfull. Thank you for explaining to me how they work and keep up the great work on this mod.

@Tsoonami
k, well again, some of what you need is already in AlphaMap ;)
1.)
AlphaMap has a feature that allows you to navigate between linked/neighbouring Instance maps.
So, open up a Dire Maul map for example, and look at the on map Notes saying "Leads to DM East", or "...North", and then click on these notes.
If you Click on these Notes, then AlphaMap will follow the link and switch to the indicated Instance map.
If you have Instance_Exterior maps installed as well, then these links can also switch between the Instance and the 'entrance' map for that Instance.
This functionality also works when clicking on the note Index to the right of the map, if you have chosen to leave it displayed.
2.)
Where stairs, or paths link 2 different unconnected parts of the map, then if you hover your mouse over one of the notes, then the other end of the stair, path is highlighted on the map - so you can see where stairs lead.
You should see examples of this on the Black Temple, or Scholomance maps, and some others.
Again, hovering over the Note in the index to the right of the map, will highlight both ends of the path/stair.
I will admit that more arrows can be useful on some maps, and there is one in particular that I want to improve; But the graphical work is very boring, and I need to free up some time to do it ;p

Ok the ban issue I hadn't thought of and makes sense. I'll check out the highlighting features I hadn't noticed! How about the path arrows to help in tunnels that overlap, ramps to different levels of the dungeon, etc?
Thanks for the quick response to my post btw!

@Tsoonami
k, well some of the things you have requested are already in AlphaMap ;)
For example, when you target a 'named' boss in an Instance, then AlphaMap highlights it to show where you are.
Also, AlphaMap tracks which Bosses have been killed by replacing their Notes with GraveYard symbols, so you know where you've been previously...
AlphaMap also implements some sharing of the above information with other AlphaMap users in the Raid.
In terms of trying to track player positions more accurately by recording arrow key pressing - Even if I could spare the time to try and implement something so complex; And Even if I could get it working accurately enough to be useful; Then AlphaMap users would probably be banned, because Blizzard do seem to have made this deliberately impossible to do.
;)

I have an idea that may or may not be possible. How bout attempting to show approximate location of the player on an instance map. This may 'could' be implemented by monitoring how long the arrow keys are pressed and or how long auto run is used. The position 'could' maybe be resynchronized when the player targets a known mob or boss that is only in certain locations in the instance. This would be greatly helpful in complex instances. Maybe this could even sync with other players that have the mod and or party spotter to show their approx location too. Also, could be helpful to add path arrows for sections that cross under or over other sections of the instance. This would map harder to navigate instances with many crossing tunnels and areas that drop up or down into another level of the dungeon. Don't know if these options are really possible but just an idea. 8)

Oops, sorry, didn't see this question.
The answer is in the FAQ.txt file included with the AddOn.
Make sure you have a BG map open when looking through the options, and go to Tab 3....

How to turn off popping up AlphaMap screen every time I enter battleground? I looked through all options, but could not find the answer. Maybe I missed it?
AlphaMap CAN show players on BG maps, World boss maps, and Instance Entrances/Exteriors.
On the Instance maps, AlphaMap will highlight any Named boss you have targetted so that you can see exactly where you are.
AlphaMap also changes the symbols for Named bosses you have killed to GraveYards so that you can track where you have been inside the Instance.
However NO AddOn can show player dots INSIDE Instances. Not MetaMap, not Cartographer, not Atlas, and not AlphaMap :(
Blizzard simply doesn't allow it. Sorry.

Changes in v3.21.20400 from v3.20.20400
---------------------------------------
- new AlphaQuestHelper plugin now included to show QuestHelper Icons and "Ants" on AlphaMap
NOTE : this will ONLY work with the NEXT release of QuestHelper
i.e. versions LATER than "QuestHelper 0.44.17-gf3f3830"
With earlier versions, the QuestHelper icons will not remain attached to AlphaMap, so please await the next release of QuestHelper
You should probably leave the AlphaQuestHelper plugin disabled until a compatible QuestHelper is released
I'm releasing this version slightly early in advance of the QuestHelper update, as I'm stopping playing for a while, and may not get a chance later...

Changes in v3.00.20300 from v2.97.20300
---------------------------------------
- Map categories are now defined as separate Plugins so you can pick and choose which maps you want to load
Other Plugins for other maps can be created and registered with AlphaMap
- split the non-Instance Raid category in to 2 types : WorldBosses, and Instance Exteriors
- added Instance Exterior maps for CoT, Coilfang, Auchindoun, Sunken Temple, Blackfathom Deeps, The Deadmines, Scarlet Monastery, & Karazahn
All show player/raid dots.
- added a new Searching feature to help find/highlight particular Mobs/NPCs
Works via a new slash command "/am -s <Search for this text>"
All AlphaMap maps with Notes containing the text will be reported to the chat frame.
If an AlphaMap map is open and has notes containing the text, then those notes will be highlighted.
"/am -s" without any other text will turn off search highlights on the map.
- updated the way that the map selector drop down boxes are updated - BIG improvement in usability overall
- allowed map changing again by <Alt>-clicking at the edge of the map.
To Zoom in to particular world map textures, hold <Shift> & <Alt> down when left clicking the AlphaMap
(<Alt> Right click to zoom out)
- fixed a bug that would happen when moving from Arathi Basin to another Battleground
- fixed an Instance progress bug, where the key symbols for bosses would change to GY symbols and be displayed, even though the key was hidden

Changes in v2.97.20300 from v2.96.20300
---------------------------------------
- fixed an issue with the Instance / BG maps being mistakenly left in a zoomed state
Instance/BG maps will auto-zoom out when you change map.
<Alt>-Left Click to zoom in on a particular part of the Instance or Battleground map
<Alt>-Right Click to zoom out to the full map view again
(Must Enable "Mouse Interactive" mode)
- spam guard now in place to try and reduce Arathi Basin message spam when when the number of bases required to win is too close to call
- Gatherer and Astrolabe compatibility update
- fixed issue of the WorldMap not scaling immediately while using the slider
- MetaMapNotes support
- changes to MetaMap and Cartographer support.
Changes to the WorldMap are NOT possible using Alphamap if either of these AddOns is installed, to prevent conflicting settings
Also, change to prevent confusion between Cartographer Gatherer and the genuine article which resulted in an error

Making MapNotes from MobMap icons on AlphaMap
1.) <ALT>-Click on the AlphaMap MobMap icon to create a temporary Thottbott Map and Mininote
2.) <CTRL>-Click on the AlphaMap MobMap icon to create a permanent MapNote (Also active as Mininote)
3.) <CTRL>-<SHIFT>-Click on the AlphaMap MobMap icon to create a permanent MapNote NOT active as a Mininote
This only works from the AlphaMap MobMap icons atm, but the resulting MapNotes can be seen on AlphaMap, the WorldMap, and/or the Minimap :)
Requires "MapNotes (Fan's Update)"

Changes in v2.95.20300 from v2.94.20300
---------------------------------------
- New maps for Black Temple, The Eye, and World Bosses Doomwalker and Highlord Kruul
Only one map is supplied for Black Temple, but don't forget that AlphaMap allows you to zoom in to Instance maps by holding down the <Alt> key while left/right clicking.
So you can zoom in to particular wings of the instance to get a detailed view.
- Corrections to World Boss Encounters in Feralis, Ashenvale, and Blasted Lands
- Big database update for Instance Notes and AtlasLoot Enhanced
- Bug fix to Battleground Timers in AV and AB to display time till capture
(Note that as before, the time till capped is shown in the Tooltip for a Tower/Base, and to reduce performance costs is only calculated once when you mouse over the objective)
- New BG functionality based on Time till capped information :
Left-Clicking on a Tower that is changing hands will refresh the Timer information in the tooltip without having to wiggle the mouse around
<Control> Left-Clicking on a Tower that is changing hands will broadcast the Timer information to the Battleground Channel
- Bug fix to the Battleground calculation in AB to display the number of bases needed to win
- New BG functionality in AB
Can manually check the number of bases required to win by Left-Clicking on any of the Objectives - Farm, Blacksmith, etc.
<Control> Left-Clicking on any objective will broadcast the number of bases required to win to the Battleground Channel
- Note that you can still report Incoming enemies to BG Objectives by Right clicking on them and selecting the message to send
- TomTom compatibility changes (controlled by the Option to display MapNotes)
- MobMap compatibility changes via Plugin AddOn called "AlphaMobMap"
So enable AlphaMobMap via the Blizzard AddOn screen in order to display MobMap markers on AlphaMap
- Bug fix to Key bindings to change opacity
- Bug fix to make moving the AlphaMap much less fiddly and prevent it from dropping accidentally
- AlphaMap should now scale in situ, rather than being re-centered when changing size
- Pressing of the Escape key should now close the WorldMap if "modified" by AlphaMap

Changes in v2.94.20300 from v2.93.20300
---------------------------------------
- fixed AlphaMap's ability to modify the original Blizzard Map (Miscallaneous Tab Option)
- the Map Selector drop down boxes have been slightly reduced in size by default, and will remain a constant size no matter which UI Scale is selected.
If you are not happy with the default size, then the following slash command can be used to change it :
/am ddscale <value>
The default scale value for the Map Selector controls is 0.7, and can be changed to any value between 0.3 and 1.4.
For example :
/am ddscale 0.64 -- will reduce the size of the Map Selector boxes slightly
Use "/am ddscale" on its own to reset to the default value again.
The command will report the old and new values being set.
As an option that will be rarely used, there is no corresponding GUI component for this Option yet - perhaps later ;)
NOTE : This option controls the size of the Map Selector frame both when attached to the AlphaMap, or Free Floating.

@jewhedon
Sounds bizzarre to me, and obviously I haven't been able to repeat this kind of problem; I wouldn't have released a version where I had seen this kind of error ;)
I'm guessing its not a change to the API; I don't even think that it is another AddOn.
My suspicion is that you have had the game crash recently at some point ?
Or your computer crashed while playing WoW ?
Or possibly you have used the Alt-F4 windows shortcuts to end the game, which sadly is an unsafe thing to do :(
I'm saying this because I think your "AlphaMap.lua.bak" file has been corrupted.
One thing you could try is deleting both the Saved Variables "AlphaMap.lua" file, AND the "AlphaMap.lua.bak" files while the game is NOT running; And THEN start up the game to see if that helps.
i.e. IF you had a crash related error in the "AlphaMap.lua.bak" file, it would keep on being copied in to your new "AlphaMap.lua" file after each re-start...
If you still have the error, then my next question is does it happen even when you delete BOTH Saved Variables files, and start and end the game without changing any Settings ?
Basically, I'm wondering if there is a specific setting change that causes the problem, or if you still get the error without changing anything ?
As a last resort, if you still get the error, please send me both SavedVariables files to telic@hotmail.co.uk, and I will see if I can do anything.
Can I ask how much memory your computer has ?
Does this still happen when AlphaMap is the only enabled AddOn ?
@Silromen
Yup, it definitely needs some intelligence to use :D
But, v3 will split the maps in to separate sub-AddOns, and optional dependancies are easy to sort out. But many are pretty much mutually exclusive so your criticism is bullshit in many ways...
But thanks for the flaming-with-childish-attitude :)
That's always the way to get things done, lol ;)
Great idea, crappy implementation. VERY poorly organized, with more mis-categorized optional dependencies than you can shake a stick at. Not to mention neglecting notice of the MobMap (the only REAL dependency) in the Dependencies frame.
All in all totaling to over 30 AddOn folders if you include each *optional* dependency and their subsets/requirements.
/sigh
Here's to hoping that someone gets this great AddOn idea organized and compiled into a simpler, cleaner setup.

Having a small issue. I am getting an error.
WTF\Account\<LOGON>\SavedVariables\AlphaMap.lua:5925: unexpected symbol near '[':
I delete the .lua file and the next time I logon things are fine, but as soon as I make a change to AlphaMap and logout I get the same error and settings are not saved. This seems to be happening with a number of mods since the patch (WIM, Dailies, Bagnon). I am not sure if it is a Blizz issue. A change in the api for saved variables or some other mod hashing things up.
Thanks for the awesome mod.
