Pawn assesses the value of items for you to make it easy to decide which items are better than others. It's similar in purpose to mods such as Tank Points, but completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation. You can use it to help create multiple gear sets, or decide whether to take that weapon with higher DPS or the one with more crit rating, or decide between a necklace with MP5 and one with bonus healing.

Pawn is a mod for hardcore World of Warcraft players—you may not like it if you're not the sort of person who agonizes over stats and itemization. You can use premade Pawn 'scale tags' that other people make and post on forums to set up Pawn for your spec without any extra effort. And, if you're the kind of person who goes through Wowhead and Lootzor looking for exactly the items you want for your gear sets, builds Excel spreadsheets, installs TheoryCraft, reads Elitist Jerks... well, Pawn might just be right up your alley.

See the Pawn readme file included with the mod for more information on getting the most out of Pawn.

Patch notes for Pawn
Version 1.2.5

* What used to be called the enchanted value of an item is now the current value, and what used to be called the unenchanted value is now the base value. The word "base" now also appears on tooltips. (No functionality has changed; this is just a terminology change.)
* Fixed the error that occurred when hovering over Brewfest steins.

Version 1.2.4

* Fixed an error that occurred when hovering over profession recipes.

Version 1.2.3

* You can now select what quality of gems to use for each of your scales on the Gems tab: uncommon, rare, or epic. Each scale can have a different quality level, so your main spec scale can use epic gems, and your offspec scale can use rare gems.
* By popular request, enchanted values of items now no longer include any points for sockets on the item, since the enchanted value is meant to reflect the current state of the item. This means that before you put gems in an item, the enchanted value of an item will be lower than the unenchanted value.
* Fixed a bug where occasionally items that weren't enchanted would show two equal values, such as "123.4 (123.4)". (This was only a display issue; the values were being calculated properly.)

Version 1.2.2

* Pawn will now calculate correct socket values if you have the "normalize values (like Wowhead)" option enabled.

Version 1.2.1

* Fixed the "attempt to perform arithmetic on field '?' (a nil value)" error that some users were experiencing in Pawn 1.2.

Version 1.2

* Note: Upon installation, this version of Pawn will automatically make adjustments to each of your scales' socket values. To avoid this, you can turn off the option for each scale to always correctly match gem colors.
* By default, Pawn will automatically choose the best rare-quality level 80 gem of each color and use the value of that gem when calculating item values. Most people will no longer ever need to manually set values for red, yellow, or blue sockets.
* There's now a new Gems tab in the Pawn UI. This tab shows you the best rare-quality level 80 gems that are available for any of your scales. Never again will you wonder which gems to have cut for that new boss drop.
o The Gems tab also displays suggested meta gems, but take these with a grain of salt; Pawn ignores the special effects on the gem.
o The Gems tab only considers rare-quality level 80 gems. I'll add support for epic gems very soon in an upcoming Pawn update.
* Pawn will now add a tooltip to the item socketing window displaying the suggested gems to use when socketing that item for each of your scales. In addition, the window now has a Pawn button that takes you directly to the Gems tab for more details.
* Meta sockets are now covered by two values instead of one: the old "Meta socket" value is now "Meta: stats" and covers the normal stat bonuses from meta gems. The new value is "Meta: effect" and covers the bonus effects from meta gems. Helms with an empty meta socket will get the values from both added to their totals. Helms with a filled meta socket will get the values of Meta: effect and the actual stats on the gem added to their totals. This reflects the fact that stat-for-stat, helms with meta sockets are clearly better than helms without them because of the added effects that meta gems bring.
* Adjusted the value of MP5 in the default scale to correspond with current itemization.
* Removed the Pawn feature to show item levels, as it is now built into the game.
* Fixed the "Could not parse the item link" error that appeared when clicking the links that items such as the Titanium Seal of Dalaran and Worn Troll Dice add to chat.
* Corrected the display of socket bonuses on weapons in the Compare tab.
* (English) Enchant Boots: Greater Vitality now works again.

Pawn 1.2.5 fixes the spammy error you get when hovering over Brewfest steins. It also includes a terminology change: what used to be called the enchanted value is now the "current" value, and what used to be called the unenchanted value is now the "base" value. Hopefully this should make the two easier for new people to distinguish.

Make sure you're using the latest version of Pawn, 1.2.4. That should fix your problem. In the future, if you can include a sentence about what you were doing when the error happened it would be helpful.

Pawn 1.2.3 fixes various bugs that have cropped up since 1.2, and also adds support for epic and uncommon gems in the automatic gem valuation feature.
Pawn 1.2 is finished! It's nearly the same as beta 2 was, but now it's the recommended version for everyone. Version 1.2 is all about gem features: automatic calculation of socket values, better meta gem support, a new Gems tab, and improvements to the socketing UI. (I'll add support for the epic gems added in WoW patch 3.2 in an upcoming minor version, à la 1.2.1.)
Pawn 1.2 beta 2 has been posted. It's near-final, and includes fixes for a variety of issues in the previous beta.
The first beta release of Pawn 1.2 is finally here! There are a bunch of little tweaks and changes, some specific to WoW patch 3.2, but the big feature is that most users will never need to set or think about socket values anymore, with the exception of the non-stat effect portion of a meta gem (such as threat reduction, snare resistance, procs, and so on). Pawn will automatically choose the best gems for your scales and update the values accordingly, and then display them on a new Gems tab, and also in a window beneath the item socketing window. (You can turn this off for any or all scales if you prefer to do things manually like the good old days.) Please back up your scales before installing this beta version since it automatically changes your gem values, and as always, please let me know what you think or if you find any bugs. (Pawn 1.2 is NOT required for WoW patch 3.2 compatibility. Pawn 1.1 works just fine with only minor quirks.)

Okay, I give up. :) Pawn 1.1.12 allows you to assign a value to feral attack power once more even though it isn't a real item stat. (Don't assign a value to feral AP and weapon DPS at the same time.) It also fixes compatibility with the most recent version of Outfitter.
I look forward to it. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Thanks for the suggestions! I've got changes planned for a future version of Pawn that should make you happy in both of those cases. :)
@VgerAN, I noticed when running in debug mode that when it calculates sockets it will display whether using the matching color gem or best available would be the most beneficial. With that, would it be possible to also add that to the tooltip? When I pick up an item with a socket, it would be nice to know quickly which gem decision gives the best result. Also, back to items with sockets, could you adjust the tooltip on items without a gem in the socket to show its current Pawn value and in parenthesis the potential value? Similar to how it is done with enchants or gems in place. Thank you for everything.

The 14 * (DPS - 55) calculation is accurate as far as I'm aware. Honestly, I hadn't really considered weapons with lower than 55 DPS; that's an interesting point. The current model makes Pawn less useful for lowbie feral druids.
Regarding the change to FAP, this actually isn't a simple relation as weapons don't start granting FAP until roughly 55 dps, though after that it seems to be fairly linear: FAP ~ 14 * (weapon dps - 55). That's napkin math from the AH on my druid, btw so someone should do it properly or head over to EJ where I'm sure they have extensive spreadsheets and formulae. lol Edit: Spelling and obligatory reference to EJ forums.
It would be nice to have some scales for FFB and Arcane mages, the ones on website are out of date since 2007....
Quick note for feral druids: with patch 3.0.8, you're going to need to start assigning a value to weapon DPS. Values that you've assigned to the "feral attack power" stat are now meaningless, as such a thing technically no longer exists as an item stat.

I try to get a game of Wintergrasp in every day, so if there are ever any vehicle-related problems with Pawn, I will hopefully get them found and eliminated very quickly. :)
I tried that actually and the vehicles were still misbehaving. But honestly I'm going to be chalking it up to the fact that vehicles are just buggy in general as opposed to there being something in Pawn's code causing the problem. I only brought it up in case you knew of something in Pawn that might be causing it (since you know the code better than I do ;)) Thank you for your quick reply, and your awesome addon.
I think vehicles are pretty buggy right now. I experience pretty frequent problems whenever I enter or leave a vehicle while I'm in combat. You could just be seeing those sorts of issues. Like you say, I can't imagine anything that Pawn does affecting vehicles or action bars or unit frames in any way. I suppose it's possible, but not very likely. You might try just leaving Pawn enabled, and whenever you run into that problem, type "/console reloadui". Your UI will reset in 10-15 seconds or so, and that should fix your vehicle issues.
This is rather odd, but this morning I was having issues with vehicles (when I shot it didn't actually register. the animation played, but it didn't actually affect anything). The only mod I had enabled wad Pawn, so I logged out, disabled it, logged back in, and vehicles worked again. The reason I started off with "this is odd" is because based on my understanding of how Pawn works, there should be nothing that Pawn does to cause Vehicles not to work. Does anyone have any idea what was wrong? If you need more invo just ask and I'll supply what I can.

Thank you. Follow the trail you leave a Spanish version.
Hi! Sorry, I'm not aware of any Spanish version of Pawn. Currently I'm aware of French, German, Chinese, and Russian translations, though not all of them are up-to-date.
hello. I wonder if any Spanish version, or whether this has translated adoons. Thank you.
I've released Pawn 1.1.6. It's a minor update that fixes an error that a few people were getting on their first use of Pawn, and adds support for Enchant Boots: Greater Vitality and the hit rating effect of Titanium Weapon Chain.
(On my My Mods summary page I see a question about enchanted versus unenchanted values, but I don't see one here. Maybe it was deleted. Regardless, the answer is...) The enchanted value can be lower than an unenchanted value if you socket gems into it that aren't worth as many points as you valued the empty sockets. Of course, any gem is *actually* better than no gem at all in reality, but assigning values to sockets is all about putting a number on an item's potential.
Making the translated versions separate projects ensures faster updates for everyone, which is particularly important for a mod like Pawn that requires updates with most every content patch.
why the translations not integrated into your version? maybe madnesz (Pawn(ger)) can give you the translation :)
I've posted Pawn 1.1.5. The main changes in this version are that bears and deathknights can value base armor and bonus armor separately, and that support for blacksmithing prismatic sockets is removed. (Gems placed in those slots will still count toward the enchanted value of an item, though. This only changes things for that brief second between when you added the socket and when you put a gem in it.) I should add that the determination of what's base armor and what's bonus armor is based on the rules that go into effect in patch 3.0.8 (only the white armor value listed on cloth, cloaks, leather, mail, and plate), which differs a bit based on what is true on the current 3.0.3 live realms.
Hi! Thanks for the comment. I'm looking into doing this in an upcoming version.
Hey! Love this addon, and I have a request: Can you make it that all the scales show up on all toons, but are disabled from tooltips by default? Quite often I'm looking for gear on my other toons, but I don't have the scales imported for them. This would really help! Thanks in advance!
I've uploaded a minor update that fixes a display issue on the Compare tab and makes armor penetration work on newer Wrath items.

I don't work on the non-English versions. Have you tried contacting Wakanar, the person who maintains the German version? He may already be working on updating Pawn(ger) to a more recent version of Pawn.
Hi VgerAN, could you please include the German translation? I also would you write the translation, that need only a basic file. Because the german version is not very up todate. And I love this Mod! :-(
403 days ago
I've posted Pawn version 1.1.3, which is for WoW 3.0 only. Version 1.1.2 will work on 3.0 as well, but 1.1.3 has some new fixes, the ability to assign points to different armor types, and a nicer-looking Compare tab.
Pawn 1.1.2 has a few minor fixes for issues on the Wrath beta and 3.0 PTRs. There's no pressing need to upgrade if you only play on the live realms.
I just released Pawn 1.1.1, which contains the fix for Link Wrangler compatibility.
Great! And the LinkWrangler tooltips look better now - Pawn is no longer adding (*) marks to lines added by other mods :)
That works, and the fix will be in Pawn 1.1.1.
Thanks for the heads-up. That looks likely to be the right fix, and I'll verify tonight or tomorrow night.
Pawn v1.1 stopped working with LinkWrangler :( Suggested fix: replace Pawn.lua line 354 PawnUpdateTooltip(Tooltip:GetName()) with this line instead: PawnUpdateTooltip(Tooltip:GetName(), "SetHyperlink", ItemLink) Seems to work so far...
The final release of Pawn 1.1 is here! This version works fully on both the live realms and Wrath of the Lich King. Besides the Wrath compatibility and support for new types of items, the big change in this version is the Compare tab. Right-click on an item link window or an item being rolled for, or hover over an item in someone's inventory and press "]", and Pawn will give you a stat-by-stat breakdown of the two items, and clearly show you which one is better based on your selected scale.
Pawn 1.1 beta 1 is now available on the Beta Version tab above, and it's the first version of Pawn to be fully compatible with both the live 2.4 realms and the Wrath of the Lich King beta. In addition to the Wrath compatibility, which was a heroic effort in and of itself (special thanks to everyone who submitted bug reports!), the big new feature in 1.1 is the Compare tab, which lets you drill down into the details of two items, showing you exactly how they differ and why one is better than the other. Check it out if you like living on the edge. I've been using 1.1 myself on the live realms for weeks and weeks now, so I don't actually anticipate that the beta will last long; a 1.1 release shouldn't be too far off.
Also my rich main character might want to buy equipment at auction for my lowbie alts. So having a rogue scale is nice on my lvl 50 druid... etc. Ya know, there arent many scales to go from on the official site.. and they are grossly outdated. I find myself constantly tweeking my scales, and well it'd be super if i could sync my revisions with my buddies that use this mod also.
Okay, thanks for the clarification. One thing that I'd like to do is make it possible for people to really easily share their scales via whispers. Unfortunately, that doesn't quite solve your multi-character problem, since you wouldn't be online with both characters on the same account at once. Blizzard is changing the way that mods store data a bit in the expansion, but after that, I'll see what I can do about adding more storage options.
I help other guild members select gear, or friends. Alternatively, I'm looking for a way to encode all the scales I want into the initial installation files, for re-install purposes but also making it easier for friends to install this and have the same scales I do. Also this would eliminate my previous request, would it not?
Not currently. It's in the "future versions" section of the (massive) readme as a possibility. Why would you want that feature? How often are your scales useful for multiple characters? For bank alts? (Those are actual questions, not just me being an ass.)
Fine, I'll bite anyways. Hey is it possible to have the scales *not* character specific? You know like saved so all my characters and new characters have access to the scales that i've already set up?
'fraidnot.
I'm kinda hesitant to use an alpha ver. Unless it also allows square root calculations for intelligence mana regen ratings? ;)
It looks like I've already fixed this problem in the latest Pawn 1.1 alpha. So, you can either upgrade to that, or leave enchanted values on your tooltips if you want to stick with 1.0.4. Thanks again for fiddling around with this.
Ah; thanks -- that helps a lot. I'll make sure that Pawn 1.1 doesn't have this bug.
AHA! It only works on item links when I enable "calculate enchanted values"! Or.. after opening the item link, unchecking "calculate UNechanted values" then re-enabling it makes the stats magically appear! http://up.norganna.org/index.php/lUVPwD9/pawn_new.zip
479 days ago
Hmm, and it's not just certain items, right? One of your three scales must value Intellect or Spirit, so it doesn't look like you aren't getting values simply because of that particular item. I can see that you have the "add a space before the values" option enabled; do you know if there are any other options you've changed? Anyway, I'm sorry for the troubles; if you have user interface errors enabled and you still get that behavior and no errors, I'm not sure what's up. While I try to figure out what's going on, trying the latest Pawn alpha might help. It's not really ready for public use, but it can't get much worse than what you're seeing already. :) http://wow.curseforge.com/projects/pawn/
479 days ago
turned off ALL addons (except Pawn of course) and... same issue! http://up.norganna.org/index.php/vDvDj0o/WoWScrnShot_073008_192341.jpg
479 days ago
Thanks. Can you try it with Auctioneer (all of the Auc- mods), Enchantrix, and EnhTooltip disabled as well? All of those things deal with tooltips too. (Outfitter also does, but it looks like you have its tooltip option disabled, so it should be fine, and I always test with Outfitter anyway.) Once those are disabled, make sure that you reload with /console reloadui, or logging out and back in.
I did so, only having auctioneer and a few other simple addons active. first ss set is with everything on, second set is with most things off: http://up.norganna.org/index.php/lZBTiaD/proof.zip http://up.norganna.org/index.php/lQi11KV/proof2.zip
480 days ago
Okay; I'll need you to try it with all of your other mods disabled (or at least ones that affect the tooltips), and then slowly reenable mods a few at a time and keep going until it stops working again. Let me know which mod is causing it to no longer work, and I can see if I can make a future version of Pawn compatible with that mod.
I've tried that... about 10 times still nothing. I have screenshots that show me trying 4 times
480 days ago
It does. If it's the first time you've seen that item in a while, sometimes you need to close the item and reopen it to see the Pawn values. I've seen that problem with every other tooltip mod (even Blizzard's PTR feedback UI), so I'm not sure what the solution for that is, but the workaround is really simple.
How's come this doesn'tshow values for linked items (from chat) ?
Thank you I will try both suggestions and verify my scale empty gemslot weights.
I can take a look, but it's not necessarily a bug when the enchanted value is lower than the unenchanted value. If you socket a gem that is worth less than the value you gave to the empty socket, or you socket a gem of the correct color when you could get more stats by ignoring the socket bonus, the value WILL go down. I can try to debug the problem if you can give me the full item ID of at least one of the items that's showing numbers that appear to be incorrect. To get this information, click "show item IDs" on the Pawn options page. Chain of Unleashed Rage will start with "33331:", but I need the numbers after that. You might also be able to see what's going on yourself by using Pawn's debug mode (/pawn debug on, or turn it on in the UI). That option will spew a lot of data to your chat window.
I don't know what exactly "fail to work properly" means but both 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 give me enchanted values that are less than the unenchanted ones on a couple items. Obviously the gems/enchants contain stats that I've weighted positively in my scale. This is observed on "Chain of Unleashed Rage" gemmed with +8str and +4crit+6stam, "Sunstrider Warboots" gemmed with +8str and +4str+6stam as well as "Legplates of Unending Fury" gemmed with +5crit+5str and +5str+7stam. Other equipment slots show "normal" values with enchanted/gemmed value being higher than the unenchanted in parentheses. Reverting to 1.0.2 shows expected values for all slots.
I've uploaded a small new version, Pawn 1.0.4. This fixes a problem that some people were having where Pawn would fail to work properly if you had one or more scales that didn't assign a value to the spell damage stat.
I'm glad that the addon itself is updated regularly. I just wish the scales on the forum were updated too. All the ones I would like to use are way out of date, and I don't know how to fix them myself.
Pawn 1.0.3 is out. This is a "preparing for Wrath of the Lich King" release. I made a few changes to make it hopefully behave properly on the Wrath beta, including support for the new spell power stat. This version also works on the live realms. If you're a caster class in the beta, you will probably need to maintain slightly different scales between your live and beta characters; see the Wrath section of the readme file for further details on itemization changes. I'm not in the Wrath beta yet, so if you run into problems using Pawn in the beta with this version, let me know, and I'll see if I can make another update.
Yep, that should do it. I'll have that fixed in the next version. If you want to make sure you can handle items that show up without the "+", change it to "%+?" (percent plus question). Thanks.
First off, I have to say -- excellent mod. I love this thing to death, but my guildies sound about ready to shoot me on account of the fact I can't shut up about itemization stats now. Muhahahahaha. Anyway, I believe I have found a bug. The parser seems to ignore the tooltip string for Enchant Shield - Shield Block, "+15 Shield Block Rating." None of my scales which use block rating in their calculations show any change on a shield with this enchant, and the tooltip shows the asterisk/"Pawn gave no value ..." message. I smell a missing token string :-) Edit: Found the line. On line 506 of Localization.lua, the string for the block value enchant should have a + sign after the regex start-of-string anchor: {"^+(%d+) Shield Block Rating$", "BlockRating"}, ...That fixed it for me.

Fairnuff. I check this site and Curse ten times a week or so. The forums I check more like once every week or couple weeks.
yeah sry...it's just because the mod-authors often check the comments on one site...never mind,I'm on your board now anyway, great mod,a good replacement for heal- and tankpoints. Try to get some good values from the jerks and post them on the forum...
(You only need to post your question to one site. I answered this on Curse, but for the curious people reading here:) SpellPower is the old stat from before the spell damage -> healing changes; 1 SpellPower = 1 Spell Damage + 1 Healing. When you import that scale into Pawn, it will try to guess the Spell Damage and Healing values you'd want, but you should check them.
There are a lot of scales with "0,5" scales for a value but I'm not able to add them, just 1 and 0 is accepted... edit: ahhhhhhhh sry^^ Tried 0,5 all the time...0.5 works btw: some of the scales in your forum contains sth called "spellpower" what's that ? spelldmg ? penetration ?
I've released Pawn 1.0.2, which works with the live realms and 2.4.3 PTRs. It's a minor bug fix release, and there are no new features per se.
Okay, I've released Pawn 1.0.1, which lets you turn off the relatively new behavior where Pawn will calculate an item's value based on the best gems that could be inserted, ignoring socket bonuses, if that maximizes the value. You can turn that behavior off per individual scale; just choose that scale and click one of the colored sockets in the stat list and you'll see the option. Also, for you resto shamans out there, I've prepared three scales for the "sample scales" document that comes with Pawn based on the popular Elitist Jerks thread "How to Heal like a Pro."

The big day is here -- Pawn is now at version 1.0. Despite the big version number, there's not a ton of new features in this release (0.9 did, after all, just come out). The main thing in this release is that I've restored compatibility with Link Wrangler, and added some niceties to Link Wrangler tooltips: inventory icons and Pawn values on "currently equipped" LW tooltips.
