GemHelper v1.8.2
22 December 2009
(Written for Live Servers v3.3.0.11159)
(r103 on wowace)

Search, filter and craft gems in the game!

For non-Jewelcrafters, GemHelper serves as a encyclopedia for gems much like what AtlasLoot Enhanced is for instance and reputation loot. With many search filters for the exact gem colours, stats and materials, users can quickly find the best gem to socket into their new equipment without having to harass a Jewelcrafter or check a website about what gems are available.

For Jewelcrafters, GemHelper goes a step further and allows users to craft gems directly from the GemHelper UI with extra options such as 'Have Materials' that Enchanters currently have. Jewelcrafters are also able to replace the default Blizzard Jewelcrafting UI.

The gem tooltips will list the materials needed to craft it or the location where the gem can be found/purchased. Currently, the database contains 565 gems. All gems should be (more or less) safe to query the server for (the link) because if someone has the gem on the server (in inventory, bank or socketted in gear) and has logged on since the last server reboot, it will be safe to query.

To use GemHelper, type /gh or /gemhelper ingame. If you are a Jewelcrafter, you open the GemHelper window by pressing the Jewelcrafting button on your actionbar or spellbook.

This addon can be used along with GemList, CraftList, CraftList2, ATSW, Skillet.

Quirks:
If you open the GemHelper window via the slash command (/gh or /gemhelper), you will not be able to craft gems from it. You must open the GemHelper window via the Jewelcrafting button on your actionbars/spellbook. This is NOT a bug and is a limitation of the WoW game engine.

What I need:
Localization needed for Spanish. GemHelper will currently work for English, French, German, Taiwan, Chinese and Korean clients.

If you would like to help with localization, send me your localization LUA file at xinhuan @ gmail.com for the various languages and name your email subject topic 'GemHelper Localization'.

Will we get an update for the latest patch?

This is one of my "must have" addons as a working Jewelcrafter. It's easily one of the best crafting mods I've worked with... and that said, do you plan to keep it updated going in to WotLK? :)

Firegrove: /gh will open Gemhelper.

longshotdrl: This is intended. Often times, many people trade you gems to cut, and you just want to be able to cut what they traded you, and ignore everything else in your bank. In fact, the default UI also ignores banked items.

A very helpful addon. I love it.

It seems that in order to use the 2 checkboxes: Have Materials and That <character> Can Cut, the materials must be in my inventory. It doesn't seem to recognize my banked items. So every time I wish to cut a gem I need to go to the bank, grab all the materials, and then proceed to see what I can cut.

Perhaps I am just missing something obvious, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks a lot firegrove :)

Ackis' Recipe List was the thing i was looking for, showed me all the designs i was missing. The other one was more or less a vendor only list. If the Recipe List could be intergrated within GemHelper, would be nice to see.

@Riggsmeister...

One addon that might help with your request #3 is Ackis Recipe List. It gives you a separate screen that shows you all of the recipes that you are missing. There is also RecipeRadar that will show you some of the recipes that you're missing and show you in the auction house which ones your have and need by coloring the recipe icon. Both of them show you where you can get any recipes that you are missing. Either or both of these might help you until GemHelper includes those options. Keep in mind I am not a JC, but I'm pretty sure they work with JC.

As a JC i found this a great mod. The filters are great, helps out a lot finding the gem you are looking for. There are a few things i'd like to see in the future though:

(1) The ability to link the design as well through whispers/guildchat etc. A lot of people are asking me what mats are needed for the gem they are looking for and others want to see it just to be sure that I can craft the gem. Currently I have to use the [+] button to get to the original JC menu and look it up again.

(2) Not as important as nr#1, but if possible: try to add a button that creates the 'Brilliant Glass' gem :) again i have to use [+] button to get to it. If it can be done then great, if not.. no biggie.

(3) A function/option that lets you see the designs you are missing. As a JC i know that there are a lot of BoE designs sold on the Auction House, it would be nice to know wich ones you are missing and keep an eye out for.

Last but not least, keep up the good work mate ;)

I just found this addon a couple weeks ago and I must say it's a great thing...awesome job!

I am a non-jewelcrafter and didn't really find a way to open the GemHelper frame easily. As a result, I have created a Titan Panel plug-in that allows you to open and close GemHelper with a single click. Feel free to include it with your distributed archive file. It can be found here:

GemHelper 1.6 is now available here with 2.4 stuff!

elladine: Delete the whole GemHelper folder and redownload/reinstall. Or just deleting the .svn folder (yes it begins with a . and its a hidden folder) from the GemHelper folder will allow WAU to update it.

Heh.. didn't know it was on WoWAce... 1.6 can be downloaded manually from http://files.wowace.com/GemHelper/

wowaceupdater says it's been updated 8 hours ago, but any time it tries to update it it says 'skipping (protected)'. how do you unprotect it?

Is there going to be a new update for the 2.4 patch supporting the new gems and new gem stats?

GemHelper 1.5 updated.

Perunaion: Request declined. This core aim of this addon is not meant to store collected data about every jewelcrafting you meet.

I will have an update tonight for patch 2.3 with the new Chaotic meta gem.

I like this mod, it works well for me as a non-jc. But there is one feature that I think would be great..
-Maintain a cached copy of a known jewlcrafter guildmate's recipes (presumably aquired through !gem). I'd like this to be searchable so that I can select "Known by <guild member>" or "Known by any guild member" for when I'm looking up gems. If I can enter or select the jewel-crafters in the game, I'd like it to query them via the !gem mod for their recipes and store it. Maybe it could do this every so often? Perhaps once a week for highlevel jc's. Share the data amongst anyone else with the mod online. This way I can search Adam's recipes and send him a list of what I'd like made even though he isn't online. With that data on hand, it'd be able to use the superb filtering gui that you've created for GH.

It's a great mod, but the normal download link isn't working.
