ShadowSeer v0.96. readme - by Arelenda (EU - AD)

ShadowSeer features:

1. An overview of the damage you did, with what spells.
2. A tracker of Improved Shadow Bolt damage, and how it affects raid damage
3. An extensive overview of your trinkets/set bonuses/procs, detailing how they affected your damage
4. How extra damage, haste rating, crit rating and hit rating would affect your damage, based on the gathered data

Basically, everything a warlock needs to make solid gear/talent choices and optimize their spell use.

ShadowSeer is still under development, but all features are in now.

There is no support for non-english clients. This might change after the WoW combat system revamp, expected in 2.4. Development is on hold until 2.4, as I'm not too happy with range issues.

This is not a fully fledged synching damage meter, there's plenty of those. This one will just tell you stuff those things will not.

basic commands:
/ss help

/ss on
/ss off
/ss show
/ss hide
/ss clear

All tooltip data can be reported to party, raid or via whispers now, using hotkeys.

Patch notes for ShadowSeer v0.96beta
V096.c.2 out:
- fixed a minor issue with Shadow Priest spells in raid damage list
- removed debug message
- fixed spellstrike and elder scribe set
- fixed a few GUI glitches

V096.b out:
- fixed the "disable" button
- new hotkeys to scroll down/up 5 lines at a time
- minor tweaks

V096.a out:
- fixed a minor issue with spellpower detection
- fixed a bug where some buttons got disabled on the menu
- the proc list now always shows you your average spellpower, even if you don't have any procs.

New release: 0.96
- cleared up the GUI some more. (colors, yay!)
- improved the estimation math

Expect some more minor tweaks and touches before final release.

Not sure if anyone knows of how to help me at all, but I downloaded the addon, and it worked fine once, however now when I use it, It appears to work fine, but when I cast any type of spells no information comes up for me, I don't get added to the list. Is this due to the addon being out of date, or am I doing something wrong?
I just downloaded the mod. First off, it looks great. My question is with the report via chat. When I use the key binding it just sends the "bar" name to the chat panel. For example, Shadowpriest 1 or MyLock. But no other data. Is this how it is suppose to work?
Horadrim: Can't open that, unfortunately.
Arelenda: Got that combatlog you requested: http://members.lycos.nl/viper666/wow/WoWCombatLog_Teron_20071112.rar
820 days ago
sinnocence: That is pretty weird. Try using /ss rangeup, and disabling other mods to see if the problem persists. You're using an english client?
I am only seeing my own damage information as well. I never see anyone else when I'm in a raid or party. I've actually never seen anyone else's information listed through all the versions I've had installed. I just thought they had to have the mod installed too so I could see them.
Horadrim: Localisation is currently on hold until 2.3 and possibly 2.4. ShadowSeer would require a major rewrite, it was definitely not written with localisation in mind.
Tonight's combatloging messed up somehow :/ I'll try that again tomorrow... Regarding the localisation of warlock talents, there seems to be a more convenient way besides translating them all and saving them in the localisation files: GetTalentInfo(tabIndex, talentIndex, [inspect]) the following will get the info about Improved Shadowbolt (the talentname, and x/max point spent in it) local nameTalent, _, _, _, currRank, maxRank= GetTalentInfo(3,1); I think I understand what Hiko meant by memory issues, merely parsing lag I presume. This becomes aparent the more addons with separate "parsing engines" you have. Since I got all taht kind of addons replaced with an Ace2 equivalent, this became less of an issue. Optimising code is also needed when parsing stuff. I have made an improved version of DamageDigest (can be found in a very old and basic version on Curse) which is quite simple in the way I parse the damage done and recognise crits/hits/resists etc before displaying them couloured in the scrolling frame. (I stepped away from matching complete log strings. Events are enough to know if you're dealing with yours or someone elses DD/DoT spells damage, then search for localized keywords) Might be worth taking a look at: DamageDigest: http://members.lycos.nl/viper666/wow/DamageDigest.rar Hiko: Hi mate :)
Hiko: Shadowseer won't use much memory, it's not that much code or data. Don't save multiple raids if you're concerned about memory usage.

Hi Arelenda and thanks for your work/Help (i'm coming from EJ Forum ^^) I Just wanted to know if ShadowSeer is memorry efficient, i've been having issues recently with my memories :x Anyway I'll use your mod since it's the thing i was looking for (not so fan about warlock spreadsheet). Regarding the Fr Localisation, although i'm playing on en English Client, i'll be able to help as well if needed Ps :Plop Hora ;)
arelenda: Just realized by reading you can't download that archive it can't be done by simply left-clicking the link (will show some webpage wich in the end offers anything except what's intended), try right-click -> "save target as" (worked for me with the link in my previous comment) As for the combat logs, I could provide you with a fresh frFR one early monday night (after the sunday's raid). Regarding email, si there anyway to letting you know my addres through some private messaging in here? (tried at your profile but didn't find anything to do so)
Horadrim: I can't download the rar for some reason. It'd help me if you included a raid combat log (or partial raid combat log) and your email addy in the rar.
Hi, seems like a great mod from what I've seen/heard... Unfortunatly I'm playing on an frFR client which isn't compatible :/ I have made an attempt to localize Shadowseer (spell/talent/buff/debuff names, stringmatchings), but it won't work either. The combatlog stringmatches are were I'm stuck at to make it work I believe.Maybe Arelenda or someone else can take a look at it :) Modified Shadowseer v0.96b for localization purposes: http://members.lycos.nl/viper666/wow/ShadowSeer_0.96b_Localized.rar
828 days ago
Nedrith: That's weird. I can't reproduce it. It should pick up all shadow damage done by people in your raid. I'll do some testing. Update: found an issue with ShadowSeer and Shadowpriest damage. updated (v096.c.2), but I'm not sure if it'll fix your problem.
I should be able to see all dps, my recap picks up everyone perfectly. and i have already increased my range in the config file using the /console commands. also tried /ss rangeup and i still can't see anyone else besides myself even when they are standing right on top of us. suppose i'll try disabling all other mods to see if something else is interferring with it. edit: disabled all mods besides shadowseer and still can't see any other warlocks/shadow priests.... even when they are standing on top of me.
It will only tell you about shadow damage it can see. If you're reasonably close you'll see other people's shadow damage. Try /ss rangeup if you're having range issues.
i'm using the mod and it's quite nice, however does every shadow caster need to have the mod to see other locks/shadow priests shadow damage? i'm only seeing my own damage which isn't giving me the data i want.;(
829 days ago
Oops. Accidentally left some debug code in there. Fixed now in 0.96c.1 I don't use the diamond, I'm not able to test it reliably. It's being changed in 2.3 anyway.
Great mod, thank you! Could we choose to hide the 'Buff detected' messages in chat window? And adding the 'Focus' haste buff from Mystical Skyfire Diamond?
Fixed.
Great mod so far. Can you add the spell dmg proc from Robe of the Elder Scribes.
Grobyc: Just report the first line first, it contains that data.
Just for future reference when you do decide to update it some more. As far as reporting goes, it might also be a good idea to report the name as well as the selected line because as it is now, it just reports the line and doesn't say who it is, so you'll have send a message before or after telling the person the name, then report it which is inconvenient and doesn't save the receiver any less "spam".
I'll take a look into ISB, I'm getting some weird results myself. Mod development is on hold, as I think it's good enough as it is. I'll rework it when 2.3 is out.
Ah, got it to work, thanks. I think it's actually a tad better (although more work) this way since it can report a variety of things rather than just one. I agree that you could just look at the each individual spell for the crit, it's just a little misleading seeing less crit than it should because of DoT's. I looked at my difference between contribution and gains and I somehow ended up with a negative number when I was soloing, how's that possible? Shouldn't my contribution and gains at least be positive, or more intuitively, 0 since I'm throwing up ISB but also using it up?
Grobyc: Reporting: you can report individual lines (previous reporting was way too spammy), so you can scroll up or down in the tooltip, using the keybindings. Look for line down/line up. Then you can report the line you've selected using the report button. It's not really intuitive, I know. The crit ratio is that way by design. I don't see a good reason to change it, since you can just look up your crit rate per spell anyway.
If I am reading the data correctly, each tick of a DoT is considered as a separate attack even though it cannot crit but count towards the % of crit. I.e. I crit 4/8 of my Shadowbolts (therefore 50% crit rate), I also cast a Corruption that ticks 6 times. However, when I look at my overall status for crits, it would say 4/14 with a crit rate of 28.6% making my actual crit rate smaller than what it really is due to DoTs. Is there a reason for it or just an error or is it just something you can't get around? Also, I tried reporting the information after binding a hotkey (since it doesn't seem like clicking is an option to report anymore) and mousing over a player's name and hitting the key binding will only report the player's name and nothing else (there is information to report). Am I doing something wrong or is it not working correctly? I haven't raided with the newest version yet so I can't give feedback on it yet, however, with the previous versions, it's working pretty good as far as I can tell and I like it very much. Also, nice work with the difference between contributions and gains, always good to know who's leeching off my ISBs LOL.

Oops. Fixed.

The "bonuses on spell hit/crit/+damage/haste" was moved to "your spells" (mouseover the first field), since it also counts fire damage now. I figured it didn't make sense to put in the "shadow only" raid part since that'd imply it only told you how shadow damage would be influenced. I'll probably undo that change. The load&save feature is working as intended. It allows you to save data and resume from that point, so you can combine multiple raids with it. I don't intend to expand it much more.
Saving data doesn't work at all. After trying to load the saved data, it reports there is no data found. Clearing list also fails at reseting it back to default so I'm stuck with "No Saved Data Found" in the box. Also, prior to testing the saved data, I tried to mouse over my own name to see a report of what damage has been done and nothing shows up. Two improvements did happen though: my name didn't pop up when I first logged in (and I'm assuming alts won't show up in this manner as well) and the spamming issue is fixed somewhat. It doesn't spam me with a wall of text now, however, there are several lua errors that give me a couple (about 2) lines of lua error, mainly related to saving data, I'm sure it's unavoidable till you get the saving data problem fixed. EDIT: Forgot to log out after replacing the folder. Turns out that using /reloadui causes those problems to happen which don't happen with 90% of the mods out there, my mistake (yes, I know exiting and reopening is the way it's supposed to work). I have noticed something about the saved data though. Unlike SWStats, if I load a given data and continue to damage things, it'll count towards the saved data rather than have it's own recording. A feature that I kind of miss is the theoretical damage increase that you would receive if you gained 100 spell damage, 100 spell crit, max spell hit, and 100 spell haste. Was this removed intentionally or you just didn't see a point in having it?
Not sure if it was intended (not sure why it would be intended anyway), but whenever I log onto alts that are unable to do any shadow damage (druid, mage, etc.), they still come up on the list. If it was not intended, are you able to remove everyone's name from the list as long as they don't deal any shadow damage? I.e. I log onto my lock but it has my name on the list even though I haven't done anything, would it be possible to keep my name off the list until I deal shadow damage (might also solve the alt issue)? Also, although I'm not sure how much of use the feature would be, but perhaps being able to save the data for a period of time would help (similar to what SWStats does). I.e. if I wanted to keep the data to report it to someone after a raid but they aren't on, however, if I do any hostile action, it'll skew the data. Again, I'm not sure how helpful this may be, probably more convenient than helpful. Regarding the spamming error issue, it still happens when I open the map and when I click on an item link. But as you've said, I think it's just ShadowSeer reporting the error and not causing it, however, it's still doing it once. I like the mod very much and keep up the good work.
Good point, Grobyc. Next version. I'll see about removing the names, etc. Saving data between raids seems something potentially useful (and not too much work to add). Thanks for all the feedback.
What did you mean by that % boosted by ISB is for raid ISB damage and not my personal damage? After mousing over my Shadowbolt, it will always give me a % if I landed damage after a crit with ISB up (sometimes 8%, other times, 15% and anything in between depending on the situation), so doesn't that mean it does include my own personal damage? I'm guessing this % is telling me how much extra damage ISB gave me. Correct me if I'm wrong. I understand this is a lot of questions to answer and I appreciate the time you've taken to answer my concerns. However, as a suggestion, maybe add in a FAQ section in the future in the readme to answer some of the questions that many people like me may ask since it's not always clear what the data means just by looking at it. Thanks.

Grobyc: About raid shadow damage: since ShadowSeer doesn't synch, the total shadow damage of the raid will not be accurate if people are out of range. /ss rangeup can set the range to max, permanently, although SWStats and other damage meters might mess with it too. The range modifier doesn't seem to apply to your own damage, only to others. As far as I can tell: - other people's damage totals: not entirely accure (range issues) - your damage totals: 100% accurate - ISB on your targets: relatively accurate (multiple creatures with the same name taking simultaneous damage can confuse it) - ISB total damage: relatively accurate, provided you were always in range of all targets - ISB breakdown of who contributed what: educated guesswork. There is no way to tell exactly. Shadowseer counts the total damage boosted by ISB, and estimates how much of that is yours. The values you see in the raid shadow damage (x% boosted by ISB) are for raid ISB damage, not your personal damage. With the addition of fire spells, the rating calculations were moved to the "Your spells" tab, since they make more sense there. (Rightclick, choose "view your spell damage", then mouseover the "All" field.) I'll update the screenshots to reflect this, when I get around to it.
It still spam the error but only once so it's not a big deal. I do have a question though: how big is the range on the recording? I did a raid tonight and I had 191 crits (which is about right), however, another warlock in the guild had 36 crits. I'm unsure if this is accurate or not since the difference is pretty large even though I have more crit (about 10% more). Double checked with WebStats and his crit really was that low, however, it didn't match up with other locks (the lock I was mentioning was the one doing the WebStats). Another question I have is that it tells me how much my ISB contributed, is the damage only tallied when it's my own ISB that's up and not any other warlocks'? I'm assuming it is but it doesn't explain what it all really means in detail in the readme. Also, I'm uncertain if you removed the feature or I did something wrong, but the theoretical damage increase (if I gained 100 spell damage, 100 crit rating, maxing out hit rating, and 100 haste rating) is gone from the .93c version.
Grobyc: Hmm, that's due to debug code being active. it'll show you errors for other mods too. The error is reported by ShadowSeer but comes from another mod. Fixed in 0.93c, you won't see it being reported any more. Onyajon: I _thought_it did already. I'll do some research. Onyajon: UPDATE: Spellstrike set has a weird wording, which confused ShadowSeer. "Spell effects increased by 92" meh. fixed in 0.93d, I think.

v0.93b: re: Crusade Trinket, working correctly! Thank you!
I received an error related to ShadowSeer v0.93b (it was happening before in previous versions also). Everytime I open the world map, it'll spam me with an error in blue (just like the color used in ShadowSeer). ShadowSeer: ERROR : Interface\FrameXML\WorldMapFrame.lua:497: Usage: UnitDebuff("unit", index [,raidFilter]) Interface\AddOns\ShadowSeer.lua:141. in function <Interface\AddOns\ShadowSeer\ShadowSeer.lua:140> [C]: ? I also use Cartographer and disabled that while leaving ShadowSeer on and the error still appears. So I think it's a pretty good guess that it's coming from ShadowSeer. PS: Love the mod though aside from the occasional spam.
Would it be possible to add support for Spellstrike bonus? It works pretty much like a trinket.
I think I found the problem. While the buff is called "Aura of the Crusader" the log actually says "You gain Aura of the Crusader (x)" where x is the amount of stacks. I think I fixed that in 0.93b, but am unable to test it.
V0.93a: Crusade Trinket still isn't reporting correctly. I kept it stacked to 10 killing some basiliks and it reports that it adds an average spell power of 1.3 Thanks!
Trinkets should be fixed in v093a, which is online now. Thanks for the feedback, that allowed me to narrow it down straight away. Turns out I forgot to test the trinket changes.
I d/l 0.93 and I am getting an error: ShadowSeer-v0.93\ShadowSeer_GUI.lua:150: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'bonus_damage' (a nil value) ShadowSeer-v0.93\ShadowSeer_GUI.lua:93: in function `ShadowSeer_BarOnEnter' <string>:"*:OnEnter":1: in function <[string "*:OnEnter"]:1> I also am not getting a window of information on mouseover on my procs/trinkets under the "view your procs" section. When I mouseover I get the error above.
The problem with crusader trinket seems to be that you're trying to get the stack count out of parsing the buff name here local x,y,stackcount = string.find(name, "Aura of the Crusader %((%d+)%)") when you should be using GetPlayerBuffApplications(id)
Try clearing the list with /ss clear. If the problem persists, it's probably linked to a trinket or proc you're using, can you tell me what those are? PS - fire spells soon!

Hey Arelenda, Just a copy and paste of a message from my bugstack addon about shadowseer: 2007/10/13 18:47:43-591-x21]: ShadowSeer-v0.91\ShadowSeer_TempBuffs.lua:162: attempt to perform arithmetic on field 'stackcount' (a nil value) ShadowSeer-v0.91\ShadowSeer.lua:472: in function `ShadowSeer_OnEvent' <string>:"*:OnEvent":1: in function <[string "*:OnEvent"]:1>
853 days ago
Crusade Trinket still isn't reporting correctly for me, unfortunately. Please keep up the great work. I love the mod.
Sinnocence: might be because it doesn't detect the crusade effect stacking. I'll do some research, but without having the trinket myself it'll be tough to debug.
I don't think it's calculating my Dark Moon: Crusade card correctly. It says average contribution is between 2 to 5 spellpower even if I keep the stack going. Or I'm reading the data incorrectly.
Unfortunately ShadowSeer does not support any client language other than english.

0.6a should fix that. I made it available. Thanks for the feedback. Sorry, but it being beta (and with this many new things crammed into it) stuff like that is going to pass through testing.

edit: yes, completely understood. that's why i reported it :-). i will try the new version here in about 5 minutes :-). thanks for the prompt fix. ----- at random intervals, for reasons not clear to me, ShadowSeer starts throwing errors. the errors are then thrown on just about every event (mouseovers, targeting, etc). reloading my UI will quiet it for a while.this is with ShadowSeer 0.6:ShadowSeer: ERROR : Interface\AddOns\ShadowSeer\ShadowSeer.lua:469: bad argument #1 to 'find' (string expected, got nil)Interface\AddOns\ShadowSeer\ShadowSeer.lua:109: in function <Interface\AddOns\ShadowSeer\ShadowSeer.lua:108>(tail call): ?[C]: ?[C]: in function `find'Interface\AddOns\ShadowSeer\ShadowSeer.lua:469: in function `ShadowSeer_OnEvent'[string "*:OnEvent"]:1: in function <[string "*:OnEvent"]:1>

Thanks for the feedback. Right now I'm working on making sure the data is accurate (and it's damn hard, it's a lot about making educated guesses). Reporting is low priority, and will be fixed when nearing v1.0. Publishing to sites is low priority too (although in theory, the data is stored in your WTF and can be taken from there by anyone). Potential beyond warlocks is _very_ hard because it requires intensive testing and incredible knowledge about the classes and their abilities. It is almost impossible to get accurate data without hours of trial runs. I do intend to add warlock fire spells, though. And some other stuff other classes can use (such as trinket bonuses etc).
Arelenda, I haven't been able to download versions beyond beta 0.3 due to outages on this site, but I did get some good data from Gruul's last night, using beta 0.3. We had only 2 warlocks. Our ISB crits increased the raid's shadow damage by an average of 7% and 9%, or ~3300 to 4800 additional shadow damage for every shadow bolt crit, if I am reading the numbers right. Some thoughts for you, which you might already be working on (or maybe, I am just a little ignorant): - I was able to publish results to party chat. Is there a way to publish to raid chat? - I think it would be useful to show (not sure you difficult the programming would be) the percentage of time that ISB crit debuff was on the mob, with an estimate of the incremental shadow DPS that the ISB crit debuff provides - If we could export the results to a file to publish on the guild web site, that might also be helpful (even better if there were formatting codes built in for forums). Also, it might be useful to store result sets for certain fights within the addon in-game: for example, to see the difference between having two, versus three, versus four warlocks in a raid group. - Finally, (and this is a long term suggestion/idea) I think that this addon has potential well beyond warlocks and shadow damage. An addon like this could also be used for BM Hunters to figure out how much extra damage the raid does due to their pet crits, or how much benefit a Ret Pally (/gasp, "a Ret Pally") provides to the raid with his crit debuff and aura, or how much extra damage using a jewel crafting consumable neck allowed a group within the raid to do. This might be well beyond your desire for the addon. If that's the case, you might also want to think about coding the addon in such a way that other smart programmers could build on your ideas for warlocks and apply them to other classes or consumables. I find that too many players focus on maximizing individual DPS rather than raid DPS and this type of addon would be helpful for showing everyone the importance of buffing other players' DPS, even if it means sacrificing some of your own DPS (the old Doom or CoR argument comes to mind). I am looking forward to using future updates of Shadowseer. Thanks again for working on this addon.

zzGreg: thanks Planned for v0.5: - damage estimate with higher hit/crit chances - fixing the issue with the shadowbolt debuff, it currently starts counting from the moment you crit, but apparently there is a bit of a delay before the ISB debuff gets applied. This is obviously related to the first addition
876 days ago
Arelenda, I used Beta 3 in SSC, last night. Sadly, we had several fast wipes on Hydross, so I didn't get any 'good' data due to the very short nature of our attempts. I like the changes you posted in Beta 4: - my bank alt doesn't cast many shadow bolts. - the 100 extra shadow damage feature sounds good too. Keeping in mind that I am still really just dabbling with your addon, what would be good to know, for each lock in the raid, is how much the raid's average and total shadow damage would go if that lock had just 1% more chance for his/her shadow bolt to Crit. The reason I suggest this is that several locks that I raid with. including myself (I am going to respec), have 1 point in Shadowburn and 4 in Devastation. It would be fun to show them, with real numbers, that having 1 more percent to Crit would have increased the raid's average and total shadow damage by X%, versus having 1 point in Shadowburn, which, in my opinion, provides practically no value to a 25 man raid. Thanks - this is the most interesting new warlock addon I have seen in a long time.

feature request: an option to grow the list upwards from the header. thanks.

Neat idea. I have read that 3 locks should be able to keep ISB up on a raid boss at all times, but it would be good to see the real data.
